Joomnik is a gallery component for Joomla! CMS displaying multiple images of items grouped by albums. Each item has description and up to 10 information fields. In case of multilingual sites, common words can be translated in the component, or Joom!Fish can be used to translate album and item names and descriptions.
Basically it displays all images from an item's folder. An item can be a model, a car, a house or similar "one" object. If one picture changes, it does not require any operation in Joomla!, new picture(s) and their thumbnails can be uploaded via FTP and that's it! In fact, this component was created for a modeling agency first, where pictures were changed very often. You can create folders and upload images (also create thumbnails) from the backend, during creating album or item. You can also define meta keywords and meta description for gallery frontpage, for each album and each item.
After installation there should be test gallery created (if you clicked that link). Let's try to create another album now, with some additional information fields. I'm assuming you installed the component without errors, and created menu position to the component. - in Joomla! backend go to Component / Joomnik Gallery / Fields
- enter for example: "camera", "lens", "place", "date" in first 4 fields
- click Save
- go to Components / Joomnik Gallery / Albums
- click New
- enter album name, for example "second album"
- set Published to Yes (you could also change Access to Registered while you are testing this feature - but then you have to be logged in from the frontend to be able to see the album)
- create folder "2nd_album" and click it's name - then the name will be updated in folder name on the left side
- let's say you want to use web_links.jpg image as this album's image. Click on the web_links.jpg - the image should appear on the right, and it's name should be updated in image field. (you could also upload different image, and use "make th" button to create thumbnail, and then click thumbnail name (starts with th_) to use smaller image for the album
- at the bottom you can enter album's description, using Joomla's editor, so it may contain texts, links, even images
- click Save
Now in the frontend you should be able to see your second album.
Let's now create an item: - go to Components / Joomnik Gallery / Items
- click New
- enter item's name, for example "sunsets"
- set Published to Yes
- select album - select "2nd_album", you should see the message "No subfolders here!" as we didn't create any yet.
- enter "_items" and click "create folder"
- create another folder, the actual one for pictures of the item, for example "sunset1"
- click on "sunset1" folder name - now on the right you should see the message "No files here!"
- browse and upload few images from your disk
- click "make all thumbnails", you should see file list is updated with thumbnails (starting with th_)
- choose one of the thumbnails (the one which you want to be displayed in album view) and click"copy to _items". Selected image is copied and renamed to th_item-name.jpg.
- fill additional information fields and description, if necessary
- click Save
Now in the frontend if you click on "second album", you should see the "sunset1" item.
The structure of albums and items is as follows, assuming images/stories/galleries/ is base path, where the albums are kept. | images/stories/galleries/album1/_items | thumbnails for items in album1 (1 thumbnail per each item, tn_item1.jpg for example) | | images/stories/galleries/album1/item1 | folder containing thumbnails (tn_01.jpg, tn_02.jpg, ...) and large images (01.jpg, 02.jpg, ...) | | images/stories/galleries/album1/item2 | | | images/stories/galleries/album1/item3 | | | images/stories/galleries/album1/item4 | | | images/stories/galleries/album2 | second album | | images/stories/galleries/album2/_items | thumbnails for items in album2 | | images/stories/galleries/album2/item1 | | | images/stories/galleries/album2/item2 | | and so on...
If you want to upgrade from previous version, please read carefully upgrade instruction in _readme.txt.
Upgrade procedure has been improved, so now only
uninstall of old version and install of new version will be needed. All
database tables should remain "untouched". Just keep your CSS file, if you did any modifications in it. Well, you should have backup of your site anyway, what is always recommended before any component installation.
But because of the above
procedure, if one wants to uninstall the gallery completely, he needs
to go to Configuration / Installation tab and perform step removing
database tables.
The latest version of Joomnik Gallery is 0.9 - you can download it from JoomlaCode or from our downloads.
